Instagram is one of the most popular social media platforms today, thanks to its clean interface and the way that users are able to interact with each other and follow profiles they are interested in and of celebrities that they are fans of. One of the most exciting things about Instagram is putting together a great “feed” as its called. The more pictures you post, the more get placed on your profile. It’s encouraging to be able to look back after a while and be proud of the pictures you have posted.
Instagram isn’t about likes or followers. Those come with time, and they aren’t the most important thing anyway. Those that get too caught up on followers and how many likes each of their pictures get are missing the point.
Whether you access Instagram from an iPhone 7 Plus, a tablet, or a Galaxy smartphone, the main point of Instagram is learning to take great pictures, and being inspired by some of the other creators and artists that are out there. Sure, it’s nice to be able to share your life with your friends and family, but there are other social media platforms for that. Instagram puts the emphasis on the photo (or the video) so that’s what we’re going to focus on today.
Taking Great Photos on Instagram
Learning to take great pictures on Instagram, or on any other platform, is a process. There are lots of great ways to practice, and there is even an in-app editing system for those that are just now learning how to edit pictures.
Use Natural Light
A photographer’s best friend is natural light. Taking photos inside or at night isn’t going to produce nearly as good of a picture, even if you have an incredibly expensive DSLR camera. The best times of day to take pictures is at dawn and dusk, just as the sun is coming up or going down. That’s why professional photographers get up early or stay up late so that they can get good pictures.
Find an External Editor
Even if the picture is taken at the best time of day, there are still external editors that can really help you if you are wanting to take the best pictures possible. Learning to edit pictures takes practice, but there are apps out there like Snapseed and VSCO that enable people to edit their pictures to an almost professional-quality. Be sure to take the tutorial and
Use Filters Cautiously
Although an external editor can be extremely helpful, it’s still easy to take filters too far and over-edit a photo. Sometimes this is the look that people are going for, but much of the time it’s not going to look as good as a more simplistic approach.
Use a DSLR Camera
Using a DSLR camera is another way to make a feed really light up. It’s easy to tell whose Instagrams are full of pictures that had been taken on a DSLR. These photos will have a much higher resolution and picture quality, and will look like the professional pictures taken by a National Geographic Photographer. If you can’t afford a DSLR camera then you could try borrowing a friend’s for a while. Otherwise, continue practicing on your smartphone until you save up enough money to be able to afford a more expensive camera.
Having an Instagram is exciting, especially for those who are trying to learn to take better pictures. Eventually, you’ll start attracting more followers and get more likes, especially if you use certain hashtags on your photos that draws more attention to them.
